Rath Yatra is the biggest festival in Puri, Odisha.The three deities are placed on a chariot which is then pushed by many participants to Gundicha Temple, (located at a distance of 3 kilometers or 1.9 miles). The event is held in conjunction with that of the Ratha Jatra festival at Puri; the same procession is held at Jagannath temples around the world. In the celebration of the public processional that is held in the temple of Jagannath in Puri thousands of devotees come to Puri to view Lord Jagannath in his chariot.
In the Jagannath Rath yatra, the trinity is usually worshiped in the temple's sanctum in Puri however, once in the month Asadha (Rainy Season in Odisha) the triads are taken on the Bada Danda (main street of Puri) and then journey (3 kilometers) towards the Shri Gundicha Temple, in enormous Chariots (ratha) that allow people to enjoy Darsana (Holy sight). This is a festival often referred to as Ratha Jatra, meaning the journey ( jatra) of the chariots ( ratha). The Rathas are huge wooden wheeled structures, built every year, and pulled by devotees. The chariot that is used for Jagannath is around 45 feet tall and 35 feet wide. It takes approximately two months to build. The artists and painters from Puri decorate the chariots , and paint flowers and other designs on wheels, the carved wooden horses and charioteer, as well as the inverted lotuses that are placed on the wall in front of the statue of the throne. The Ratha-Jatra can also be referred to by the name of Shri Gundicha jatra. Rath Yatra is the biggest and famous festival in Puri and all over Odisha.
